If you follow the information and argument in that article to its logical conclusion, we are fucked. The powers that be, the big banks such as JP Morgan, have found the way to manipulate millions into their cause of imperialism and profiteering, and we are all enthusiastically going along for the ride, supporting it. They are taking advantage of the inherent good impulse in most people, who do in fact, want change, don’t want others to be disadvantaged or in pain, and putting it toward a new century of imperialists in Africa destroying it for power and money.
I want to believe, I really want to believe, that they will find Kony, and he will be brought to justice. I also hope that leads to the arrest of the many other warlords who committed, who continue to commit, similar atrocities in Africa, and anywhere in the world.
I also want to believe this is not a King Leopold situation for the 21st century, featuring propaganda on a scale never even dreamed of by Hitler. (King Leopold II was the king of Belgium for the last 30 years of the 1800s. He controlled the Congo and murdered and mutilated millions of Africans, whom he enslaved there to profit off rubber and ivory. A huge part of the reason why Africa is the way it is today.)
Africa has been destroyed for hundreds and hundreds of years now by foreign powers, and efforts to redeem ourselves or “save the Africans” have backfired - ultra-right Christian groups tell people that condoms don’t work and that they should rely on prayer and abstinence to not die of AIDS. Millions have died because of this “help”. So, I guess, we’re going back? We’re going to get it right this time, dammit! And all the children will be saved. Cue inspirational, hip, edgy music.
The Kony video is extremely flashy and potent. We’re sold on ideas of unity, fighting injustice, fighting our own powerlessness. The Kony video is a commercial for getting behind a cause. The Kony video is asking us to support military intervention, operations that haven’t worked, on one aging warlord when there are still many out there. And our support of this cause, if truly backed by the interests of JP Morgan, may ultimately cause Africa to fall victim once again to the destruction that comes from neo-colonialism.
As Africa is raped and pillaged again and again, the global 1% grows stronger on the backs of its people, both the extremely disadvantaged and my own MTV generation that only understand things when put into music video format.
This is what “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad was about. This was also what any number of dystopic novels have been about - manipulated groupthink in the service of power.
Please, please, please think. Please stop and think and do not just pass something forward because you are told to, because your emotions have been appealed to. Research, get the facts. Pay attention to where the money’s coming from, and going to. Research how you can get involved and help in a way that doesn’t feed into the interests of the big banks and their continued quest for power and money at the hands of innocents. Pay attention to Joseph Kony, the man, and the many like him - not the campaign.
also, rick perry looks like a republican SNL caricature/slightly like arnold schwarzenegger.
ABERCROMBIE & FITCH PROPOSES A WIN-WIN SITUATION
New Albany, Ohio, August 12, 2011: Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF) today reported that it has offered compensation to Michael ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino, a character in MTV’s TV show The Jersey Shore to cease wearing A&F products.
A spokesperson for Abercrombie & Fitch commented:
“We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino’s association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image. We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans. We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and the producers of MTV’s The Jersey Shore to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response.”
Now Aeropostale needs to offer Gary Shirley cash to stop stretching out their logo.
