This is unbelievable, and yet, believable. After all the birth control debate bullshit, I’m not sure my brain will be capable of forming coherent thoughts anymore. I don’t even believe it’s the year 2012.
How is it that a shrinking group of angry white “Christian” men, in a variety of income brackets, are still able to control and intimidate this country? When you add up the number of women (who are not Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin), people of color of every country and ethnic group (and other immigrants who are not technically people of color), LGBT people, and sane, reasonable men, surely we can vastly outnumber them and squash this ridiculous culture of fear, hatred, and intimidation.
If the Democrats will not represent that cause, we need a new unified movement. I’m all for freedom of speech, but hate speech and hate acts are not covered under that, and should be persecuted as such. And that also goes toward having a country where men like Rush Limbaugh and Rick Santorum are given their rightful platform for “free speech” - their local bus station.

It’s stuff like this that makes me so fucking angry at the people (read: Republicans and everyone/everything they are associated with) who keep telling us “no, no, no”. No, you can’t have universal health care. No, you can’t have a higher minimum wage. No, we can’t help you. You have to help yourself, right? Help yourself and everything will just work out.
I grew up in a 1% town. A lot of people in my town had more mansions and summer houses and huge SUVs and sports cars and Ivy League educations than most people in this country can even dream of. When all is said and done, these people will always have money. Always. I mean, a fucking NBA player bought a mansion in my town - because major sports stars deserve to be paid millions and millions of dollars, right? When millions of average people are struggling to feed their families or pay for healthcare.
The American Dream has become a myth. You cannot just become rich by working hard. The people I grew up with had families that had been here since the Mayflower landed, had been able to accumulate wealth for hundreds of years. They are the people who control the power now. My grandfather was an immigrant and my parents both came from poor/working-class families, and their generation growing up in the 60s was the last one that could get ahead at all by working hard - because college tuition was cheap, housing was cheap, jobs were still plentiful. That ain’t the case anymore.
But it’s because now everything has become big business. Education is big business. And the income gap is ever-widening. My generation of college students who were plunged into debt are going to fall in the gaps, where a college degree only qualifies you for a minimum wage job. We are going backwards, and we cannot afford to go backwards.
There is enough to go around, and that’s what they don’t want people to know. There will ALWAYS be enough to go around. It’s a question of just distribution and a society that is willing to say “we are all in this together”.
I am the 99%, and you are too.

My mom left my alcoholic and emotionally abusive father to start a better life for us. He lost his law enforcement job due to a DUI, which took our insurance away as well. My mama works so hard to take care of me and pay for our bills and groceries, but she can’t afford birthday presents for me and I’m about to have my 6th birthday. I cry when I ask for a toy in a store and she says she can’t afford it. Then she starts to cry. If not for the kindness of family and friends, we wouldn’t have clothes or shoes. Sometimes we have to borrow money to pay bills. She says she’s embarrassed because she has a good job but can’t keep up. I love my mama and I don’t want her to be sad anymore. We are the 99%.
